President Johnson signs the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution

After Congress passed it on August 7, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, formally approving the measure that authorized him to take military action in Southeast Asia.

The resolution granted the president broad authority to use conventional military force in Vietnam without a formal declaration of war, paving the way for large-scale U.S. escalation in the conflict.
