President Truman Announces He Will Not Seek Re-election

On March 29, 1952, President Harry S. Truman publicly announced that he would not be a candidate for re-election in 1952.

The declaration ended speculation about Truman's political future, reflected his low popularity amid the Korean War and domestic controversies, and reshaped the Democratic nomination contest that produced Adlai Stevenson as the party's 1952 standard-bearer.
