Richard Nixon wins 1968 presidential election

Republican Richard M. Nixon won the 1968 presidential election, defeating Democratic nominee Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey and American Independent George Wallace.

The election ended twelve years of Democratic White House control and initiated a transition that would shift U.S. policy on Vietnam, domestic law-and-order priorities, and the federal government's direction as Lyndon Johnson prepared to leave office.
