Signed the Immigration and Nationality Act (Hart-Celler Act)

President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, abolishing the National Origins Formula and establishing a new preference system based on family reunification and skilled immigrants.

The law fundamentally changed U.S. immigration policy, opening immigration from Asia, Africa, and other regions and reshaping the country's demographic and political landscape for decades.
