Signing of the Torrijos–Carter Panama Canal Treaties

President Jimmy Carter and Panama's leader Omar Torrijos signed two treaties in Panama City transferring control of the Panama Canal to Panama and guaranteeing its neutrality.

The treaties set a framework to end U.S. control of the Canal and transfer authority to Panama by 1999, marking a major shift in U.S.-Latin American relations and provoking significant domestic debate over treaty approval.
