Signs Energy Policy and Conservation Act into law

President Ford signed the Energy Policy and Conservation Act, creating the framework for national energy policy including the Strategic Petroleum Reserve and corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) provisions.

The law responded to the 1970s oil crises by establishing the Strategic Petroleum Reserve and long‑term fuel economy and energy conservation programs that shaped U.S. energy policy for decades.
