Signs Presidential Succession Act of 1947

President Truman signed the Presidential Succession Act of 1947, which revised the statutory line of succession to place the Speaker of the House and the President pro tempore of the Senate ahead of Cabinet officers.

The law reorganized the federal presidential succession order in the postwar era and remains the statutory framework governing who succeeds the presidency after the vice president.
