Soviet blockade of land access to West Berlin begins

Soviet authorities cut off road, rail, and water access to the Allied sectors of West Berlin, initiating the Berlin Blockade.

The blockade sharply escalated Cold War tensions and forced the United States and its allies to respond to sustain West Berlin, shaping postwar Europe and East–West relations.
