Soviet Union declares war on Japan

The Soviet government announced it was declaring war on Japan, formally ending its neutrality in the Pacific theater.

The Soviet entry into the war opened a massive Manchurian offensive, altered Japan's strategic situation, and helped precipitate Japan's decision to surrender while shaping the postwar balance of power in East Asia.
