St. Clair's Defeat (Battle of the Wabash)

On November 4, 1791, U.S. forces under Major General Arthur St. Clair were routed by a Northwest Native American confederacy in what became one of the deadliest defeats for the United States Army in its early history.

The disaster exposed weaknesses in the federal military, shocked the Washington administration, and prompted a major reorganization of the army that led to the later appointment of General Anthony Wayne and a renewed campaign in the Northwest Territory.
