Stimson Doctrine declared (U.S. nonrecognition of Manchukuo)

Secretary of State Henry L. Stimson issued a note declaring that the United States would not recognize territorial changes executed by force, specifically refusing to recognize Japan's puppet state Manchukuo in Manchuria.

The Stimson Doctrine established a diplomatic precedent rejecting recognition of territorial acquisitions by aggression and signaled U.S. protest against Japanese expansion in East Asia.
