Stimson Doctrine declared: U.S. nonrecognition of Manchukuo

Secretary of State Henry L. Stimson issued a formal note on behalf of the Hoover administration declaring the United States would not recognize the Japanese-created state of Manchukuo in Manchuria.

The doctrine established a key precedent of U.S. nonrecognition of territorial changes executed by force and shaped American diplomatic response to Japanese aggression in East Asia.
