Supreme Court decision: Gratz v. Bollinger

The Supreme Court ruled 6–3 that the University of Michigan's undergraduate point-based admissions policy, which automatically awarded points to minority applicants, violated the Equal Protection Clause.

The ruling constrained race-conscious admissions practices by rejecting mechanistic racial preferences, clarifying limits on affirmative-action programs after Grutter v. Bollinger.
