Supreme Court decision in McCulloch v. Maryland

On March 6, 1819 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in McCulloch v. Maryland that Congress had implied powers under the Constitution and that a state could not tax a federal institution.

The decision affirmed federal supremacy and the doctrine of implied powers—strengthening national authority and legitimizing the Second Bank of the United States during Monroe's administration.
