Truman orders development of the hydrogen (thermonuclear) bomb

On January 31, 1950 President Truman announced that the United States would proceed with development of a thermonuclear (hydrogen) bomb following the Soviet atomic test the previous year.

The decision greatly intensified the nuclear arms race, redirected U.S. scientific and military resources toward thermonuclear weapons, and had long-term implications for Cold War strategy and global security.
