United States Recognizes the Republic of Korea (South Korea)

Following the proclamation of the Republic of Korea on August 15, 1948, the Truman administration extended U.S. recognition to the new southern government led by Syngman Rhee.

U.S. recognition affirmed American support for a noncommunist government on the Korean Peninsula, shaping Cold War alignments in East Asia and laying diplomatic groundwork preceding U.S. military involvement after the 1950 Korean War.
