Outer Space Treaty enters into force

The Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space entered into force on October 10, 1967, with the United States among the original parties.

The treaty established key international norms for peaceful use of space—prohibiting national appropriation of celestial bodies and the placement of nuclear weapons in orbit—shaping U.S. space and arms-control policy during the Johnson administration and thereafter.
